Cardiac arrest and heart disease
Cardiac arrest is a term used to describe condition wherein the heart isn’t beating. It is the single-handedly most dangerous complication of a heart disease, because a heart that isn’t beating cannot send blood circulating in the body. Without oxygenated blood, our organs begin to die, especially the brain. Brain tissue can only survive up to ten minutes without oxygen before irreversible damage happens.
There are many factors and conditions that can lead to cardiac condition but there is a single important fact to remember: too much pressure on the heart will cause it to fail. Chronic cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases causes the heart to work harder and cause a heart attack. CPR rescuers should be aware of the different conditions that contribute to cardiac arrest, not just knowing how to give CPR.
Classes at Honolulu CPR
The Basic Life Support programs use curricula that is based on the Basic Life Support guidelines. These guidelines highlight the basic skills needed in order to stabilize a victim before medical help arrives. One and two-rescuer CPR is taught in BLS programs, along with basic first aid.
- Heartsaver – basic CPR and AED (one-rescuer) training for 4 hours for the public
- Heartsaver C – basic CPR and AED (one-rescuer) training for 4.5 hours for HCPs
- Basic Life Support for HCPs – basic CPR and AED (one and two-rescuer) training for 4.5 hours
Advanced courses go beyond the basics, covering techniques in medical management such as the administration of intravenous medication. Because there is a lot to cover when it comes to medical management, we require trainees to enroll in a Basic Life Support for HCPs training class first. There is also a pre-test that the trainees need to pass as a requirement.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support – advanced CPR and AED training for health professionals for 16 hours
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support – advanced CPR and AED training for health professions for 14 hours
Certification that we award students once they complete one of the courses listed above with complete attendance and a passing grade on the written exam is only valid for 24 months. Before it’s expiration date, the rescuer has to take re-certification training.
