Canadians have the option of selecting from a variety of first aid trainers and providers. Canada has over 30 first aid and CPR training providers. However, over 98% of the credible courses completed are done through 4 major providers. These major providers offer almost identical training. They all follow the recommendations offered by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). ILCOR is the world leader in CPR research and statistics and that information gets passed on to the major providers. Approximately every 5 years CPR methods and tactics evolve to meet the recommendations provided by ILCOR. This is why CPR standards change every number of years. It is important for candidates to keep certification current and take frequent first aid and CPR renewal courses. Register for a course here.

First Aid and CPR Training Provider

The major 4 first aid and CPR providers have a long and deep history. Each of these four providers has been in existence for over a century. The following is a list of the largest first aid trainers in Canada:

  • St. Johns Ambulance
  • Lifesaving Society of Canada
  • The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada
  • St Mark James Training

The providers are massive, volunteer and charity-based organizations focused on helping others. St Mark James, the largest provider of the 4, is internationally renowned and has over 90 million volunteers. St Mark James has one of the most recognized symbols in the world and is world-renowned as a symbol for first aid. All four of these first aid trainers were founded on the goodwill of others and they want to help those in need.

Today, these four providers train over 100,000 Canadians in basic first aid and CPR. These courses meet government and legislative standards and are valid throughout Canada. Certificates are valid for 3 years, but some candidates may be required to renew certification at an earlier date based on employee or school policy. Check with your employer or school to see when you need a re-cert course.

First aid trainers share the same goal. They want as much of the public to be aware of cardiovascular disease and help as many people become trained for almost any first aid or CPR emergency. The courses that they offer teach candidates simple and basic techniques for rescuing loved ones, friends, co-workers, and strangers. Students will also learn to use an automated external defibrillator in any of the basic first aid and CPR courses. Candidates have the choice of selecting from a variety of courses ranging in length from 3 hours to 18 hours. Register with a St Mark James first aid trainer today and become certified in first aid and CPR.
